The habilitation thesis comprises the contents of the publications published
in the years 1988-91 and 94-96, together with an extensive introduction
into 'evolutionary chemistry', DNA mutagenesis, population genetics, and
problems of our understanding ribosomal protein synthesis. Several hitherto
unpublished projects have been included.
