Welcome to the Laboratory for Engineering of Synthetic Systems! Our goal is to understand, design, and produce artificial molecular systems operating at the interface between chemistry, biology, and the physical sciences. We are fascinated by the conformations of individual components of biomolecular nanosystems (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, hydrogels, synthetic polymers, nanoparticles), and how modulation of molecular conformation can be used to control function across a range of length scales, from single-molecule behavior to bulk materials. We use tools including protein engineering, polymer chemistry, and single-molecule measurement techniques to develop intelligent molecular systems with pre-programmed responses for applications across a range of sectors, from bioenergy to biomedicine.
Our lab is situated within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Basel. We are jointly affiliated with the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich. The lab was founded as part of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s National Center for Competence in Research (NCCR) in Molecular Systems Engineering (MSE).
