work practices

no smoking in all buildings of the chemikal department

eating and drinking is forbidden in all laboratories.
(food has no business being in a laboratory.)

always use safety eyewear.

use gloves when handling any chemicals, dyes (solutions or powder), solvents or pump oils.
gloves and labcoats should be removed before entering any office and the cafeteria.
wash hands after handling chemicals and solutions (especially before going upstairs.)

in case of emergency or fire alarm everyone must follow the procedures outlined on the additional page called "alarm and emergncies".

laboratory doors are fire prohibiting, so keep them closed (no stoppers!).

keep containers of solvents and dye solutions closed and clearly labeled.
(e.g.: coumarin 307 / methanol 1%,flammable, toxic)

keep tools and work areas clean. clean up after experiments and mixing dye solutions. (keep the outside surface of dye containers clean!)

prepare chemicals and dyes (and their solutions) in a fume hood. they have to be stored in fume hoods or chemical cabinets.

gasbottles have to be secured with chains in the laboratory and closed with caps when being transported.

electric equipment, cables and contacts have to be protected from accidental touching. they must not be operated without cover.

do not throw broken glass or syringes into a trashbag.

post caution signs at the entrance to work areas where lasers, flammable or poisonous dye solutions and explosives (as acetylenic compounds) are in use.

due to insurance reason, students working in laboratories outside the official working hours (8:00 - 18:00) need permission and an assistant to be present.
